420 - The Code

Lots of cultures and subcultures use their own numerology or special symbols between their members and for US cannabis enthusiasts this number is 420.

420 is a us term used to describe cannabis consumption. It is used both as definition of cannabis smoking time – 4.20 p.m., 20th of April and cannabis consumption in general. Urban legends say that it originated in 1971 in San Rafael, California. A group of local teenagers called the Waldos used this time as their meeting time, while they were on a quest to find an abandoned cannabis plant. Their attempts were unsuccessful, but eventually the phrase evolved into a local slang term for smoking pot.

The song later found its way into an issue of High Times (a cannabis magazine) and then into the realm of marijuana supporters. Today the twentieth of April is still not an official marijuana day, but annual events are held all over the globe on this day to support the legalization of marijuana and even more important legalization of medical cannabis.
